About the Medtner Society of Korea

The idea of establishing Medtner Society of Korea (MSK) was first proposed in Jan 2016. Two Korean pianists, Dr. Haeshin Shin and Dr. Hanna Choi, having studied together at Seoul National University under professor Hyoung Joon Chang, a pupil of Earl Wild who championed Medtner’s piano music, met in the International Medtner Festival in London and enthusiastically discussed the necessities of launching first Korean society exclusively dedicated to Nikolai Medtner.

Nikolai Medtner seemed to be a rare and unfamiliar composer, especially in Korea. In spite of a remarkable growth and development that dedicated Korean musicians have achieved so far, we find it very difficult to observe Medner’s music in the concert repertoire. We think this is a big loss to musical circles of Korea considering his considerable contribution to piano and vocal genre. Our thoughts have become more solid as we begun our study of his music. Why his extensive artistic endeavors in musical composition have not received the same level of critical attention as his contemporaries, such as Alexander Scriabin and Sergei Rachmaninoff?

This enquiry has motivated us to explore some ways of spotlighting Medtner as a pianist-composer whose musical composition is informed by his pianism, and conveying that Medtner’s musical works, reflecting his virtuoso pianism, can be better understood at the piano, through performing.

Building on these efforts, we hope Medtner Society of Korea 1) could help audiences to have more opportunities of appreciating Medtner’s musical works, 2) could organize various performances, seminars, projects, and collaborations for the purpose of animating his pianistic texture, and 3) could preserve invaluable resources of Medtner as well as communicate the value of his musical world.

러시아 피아니즘의 계보를 잇는 작곡가 니콜라이 메트너의 삶과 음악을 기억하며 연구하는 모임으로 시작한 한국메트너협회는 2016년 1월 29일에 발족하였다. 서울대학교 선, 후배 출신의 피아니스트 신해신과 최한나는 잊혀져가는 메트너의 음악을 널리 알리려고 애썼던 피아니스트 얼 와일드 (Earl Wild)에게 사사한 장형준 교수 밑에서 함께 수학하였으며, 지난 2016년 영국 런던에서 열린 제 1회 메트너 국제 페스티벌에 연구발표자로 초청받아 참석하며 한국에 메트너의 아름다운 음악세계와 연구적 가치를 전달하기 위한 통로를 마련하는 것에 의견을 모았다.

동시대를 살았던 라흐마니노프나 스크리아빈에 비해 상대적으로 덜 알려진 메트너는 라흐마니노프, 호로비츠, 에밀 길렐스와 같은 거장들이 그의 음악적 가치에 찬사를 보내며 여러 작품을 연주해왔지만, 소수의 음악 애호가들이나 연주자들 사이에서만 기억되는 ‘점차 잊혀져 가는 불운의 작곡가’라는 별칭을 얻어왔다. 소수의 메트너 애호가들이 활동하는 영국이나 독일 등 유럽과 달리 한국에서는 특히 그의 작품을 연주 레파토리에서 찾아보기가 힘든 실정이었는데, 한국메트너협회는 다양한 기획연주 및 연구활동을 통해 한국 클래식 음악계에 잘 알려지지 않은 피아니스트로서의 메트너의 면모, 독창적 언어를 가진 작곡자로서의 메트너의 면모, 그리고 뛰어난 교수자로서의 메트너의 면모 등 여러 관점에서 그의 음악을 분석하며 청중과 교감할 계획이다.

창단 이래 영국 메트너 협회와 독일 메트너 협회와의 국제적인 음악교류를 통해 영국, 미국, 독일 등지에서 연주회 및 연구 세미나를 다양하게 기획하고 있으며, 매년 협회 정기연주회를 통해 메트너 레파토리 발굴 및 신인 발굴에도 힘 쓸 계획이다.

ABOUT the FOUNDERS

Haeshin Shin & Hanna Choi

Pianist Haeshin Shin has appeared in recitals, concerts, and festivals throughout the United States, Russia, Scotland, Luxemburg, Belgium, Puerto Rico, China, and Korea. She had the privilege of performing in master classes of John Perry, John O'Conor, Philippe Entremont, Martino Tirimo, Willem Brons, Ian Hobson, Boris Slutsky, Dmitry Rachmanov, Choong Mo Kang, Dai Uk Lee, Yong Hi Moon, and Marilyn Nonken.

Ms. Shin won 1st prize at American Protégé Concerto Competition, 1st prize at American Protégé Romantic Music Competition, 2nd prize at Richmond Piano Competition, and received an honorable mention at Int’l Competition for Pianists in Memory of Shande Ding and Bradshaw and Buono Int’l Competition.

She has performed at Stern Auditorium and Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, and Tsai Performance Center of Boston University for concert series such as "The Bicentennial Celebration of Franz Liszt’s birth," "Liszt: Années de pèlerinage", and "Claude Debussy's 150th Anniversary." In 2017, Shin appeared at Scott Joplin centennial concert at Boston University, and her performance was recorded on Yamaha Disklavier for the Scott Joplin Online Archive (SJOA). Haeshin's performance in the 75th anniversary of Leonard Bernstein Piano Recital at Lenox Library (Tanglewood Lecture Series, 2018) was broadcast on CTSB, the public channel in the Berkshires, MA.

As a collaborative pianist, she was granted a fellowship at Garth Newel Music Center with her piano quartet, and recently went on concert tours in Washington, D.C. including the White House Holiday Performance Talent, Ireland, UK, and Spain with Boston College High School Concert Choir.

Ms. Shin formed the Medtner Society of Korea in 2016 with pianist Hanna Choi, co-founder, to introduce the music of Nikolai Medtner to the audience in her native country South Korea. Meanwhile, she has collaborated internationally with singers and instrumentalists to promote Medtner’s works: She gave an all-Medtner program concert at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow and in Boston, and also performed pieces by Medtner at the Royal Conservatory of the Hague, Netherlands. As a guest artist at Boston University Tanglewood Institute, she gave a lecture recital presenting an overview of Medtner’s piano literature.

More recently, her paper appeared in the Russian journal Muzikant Klassik in 2016, and has been selected at the International Conference "Russian Music Archives Abroad; Foreign Music Archives in Russia (2017)." Her passion for Russian music and art led to collaboration with Russian living composer Alexander Radvilovich, and Shin gave a joint recital with Radvilovich as a part of the Educational Bridge Project’s 32nd Russian-American festival in 2017.

Haeshin Shin holds a B.M. degree from Seoul National University (Cum Laude) and a M.M. degree from Boston University as a full tuition scholarship recipient. She received the Piano Department Award from BU and has been elected as a member of Pi Kappa Lambda, the national music honor society. In 2018, she received the Doctor of Musical Arts degree at BU with her dissertation "Nikolai Medtner's Forgotten Melodies, op. 38: sources, analysis, and interpretation". In the fall of 2019, she joined the piano faculty at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music.

피아니스트 신해신은 서울예고를 거쳐 서울대학교 음악대학 전체 수석 입학, 우등 (Cum Laude) 으로 졸업하였다. 이어 미국 보스턴 대학 (Boston University) 에 전액 장학생으로 입학하여 피아노 연주 석사 학위를 취득했으며, 같은 학교에서 "니콜라이 메트너의 <잊혀진 멜로디, 작품 번호 38>: 일차적 문헌 및 자료를 바탕으로 한 분석과 해석" 논문으로 박사학위 (DMA) 를 취득하였다. 보스턴 대학 재학 시, 보아즈 샤론 교수의 Teaching Assistant, 부전공 실기 지도 및 피아노학과 행정조교로 활동하였고, 우수 학생에게 수여되는 Piano Department Award를 수상하였다. 석사 과정 졸업 시에는 미국음악인명예협회 (Pi Kappa Lambda)의 정회원으로 선출되었다. 러시아 모스크바 차이코프스키 음악원에서 20세기 러시아 음악 전문가인 옐레나 돌린스카야 교수의 지도 아래 음악학 전공으로 수학한 바 있다.

삼익피아노 콩쿨, 중앙대학교, 수원여자대학 콩쿨에서 입상하였으며, 도미 이후 American Protégé 콘체르토 콩쿨, American Protégé 로맨틱 뮤직 콩쿨에서 1위, 보스턴 Richmond Piano Competition 2위, 뉴욕 Bradshaw and Buono International Competition과 중국 상하이에서 열린 International Competition for Pianists in Memory of Shande Ding 에서 Honorable Mention 을 수상하였다. American Protégé 콩쿨에서 수상한 것을 계기로 뉴욕 카네기 홀 (Stern Auditorium & Weil Recital Hall)에서 세 차례 연주하였다. 보스턴 음악대학 주최 리스트 탄생 200주년 기념 콘서트, 리스트 순례의 해 전곡 콘서트, 드뷔시 탄생 150 주년, 스캇 조플린 탄생 100주년 콘서트 시리즈에 참가, 연주하였다. 미국 보스턴 탱글우드 음악제 부설 Young Artists Piano Program에 두 차례 초청되어 독주회 및 니콜라이 메트너의 피아노 음악에 관한 렉쳐 리사이틀을 가졌으며, 참가 학생 실기지도를 맡은 바 있다.

이외에도 스코틀랜드 International Academy, 뉴욕 International Keyboard Institute & Festival, 러시아 Ruza International Piano Festival, 룩셈부르그 Vianden Music Festival, 벨기에 MusicA Braine l’Alleud, 푸에르토 리코 International Piano Festival, 중국 Shanghai International Piano Festival & Institute 등 여러 국제 음악제에 참가, 연주하였고, John Perry, John O'conor, Philippe Entremont, Martino Tirimo, Willem Brons, Ian Hobson, Boris Slutsky, Dmitry Rachmanov, 이대욱, 문용희, 강충모, Marilyn Nonken 등 세계 유수한 교수들의마스터 클래스에서 연주하며 음악적 기량을 닦았다.

미국 버지니아 주 Garth Newel Music Center에서는 실내악 펠로우쉽을 수여받아 피아노 콰르텟 연주를 가졌다. 보스턴 대학 심포니 오케스트라의 건반악기주자로서는 보스턴 심포니 홀, Tsai 퍼포먼스 센터에서 연주한 바 있으며, 현대음악 앙상블인 Time’s Arrow의 멤버로서 미국, 유럽의 생존 작곡가들을 만나고 다양한 현대음악 실내악 무대에 참여해왔다. 또한 제 32회 미국-러시아 에듀케이셔널 브릿지 프로젝트 주최 페스티벌에 초청되어 러시아 작곡가 알렉산더 라드빌로비치와 조인트 리사이틀을 가졌다. 또한 미국 Boston College High School의 콘서트 콰이어 반주자로서 스페인과 영국에서 콘서트 투어를 가진 바 있으며 미국 백악관에서 연주하였다.

2016년 한국 메트너협회를 설립한 이래로, 미국 보스턴, 러시아 모스크바, 네덜란드 헤이그에서 메트너 음악으로 구성된 리사이틀을 열어왔으며, 러시아 음악저널 뮤지칸트 클래식에 메트너의 교수법에 관한 글을 기고하였다. 또한 러시아 모스크바에서 열린 International Conference "Russian Music Archives Abroad; Foreign Music Archives in Russia (2017)" 에 초청받아 메트너의 교수법 및 <잊혀진 멜로디, 작품 번호 38>에 관한 연구 발표를 하였다.

피아니스트 신해신은 장형준, 윤영화, Boaz Sharon 을 사사하였고 현재 미국 Wisconsin Conservatory of Music 피아노 패컬티로 재직중이다.

South Korean pianist Hanna Choi began her piano studies at the age of 5. She studied at Sunwha Arts High School with Professors Kang-ok Lee and Eun-hee Kim, and received her Bachelor’s degree with Summa cum laude from Seoul National University (SNU), where she studied with Professor Hyong-joon Chang from 2006 to 2010. Then she moved to the United Kingdom to continue her musical education. She was admitted to Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS) with full scholarship, and studied with Professor Aaron Shorr. After receiving her Master degree from RCS with distinction, her intellectual passion for the piano performance led her to pursue a doctorate with Dr. Stephen Broad at University of St Andrews.

Her dissertation focuses on the performer-researcher’s artistic process of reaching an understanding of music through performance, and explores how an effort to understand music at the instrument and in the context of music-making could influence our critical evaluation of Nikolai Medtner (1880-1951). Both Medtner society and the practice-based researchers have recognized the quality and value of her research. She has been invited to share her research in many conferences, including 2015 CUK Research Forum (RCM); 2016 Exchange Talk at RCS; 2016 International Medtner Festival (British Library); and 2017 International Symposium on Practice-as-Research (Hong Kong).

Leading a busy life as a practitioner-researcher, Hanna has been a major prize-winner in many competitions, including Segye Daily Music Competition in Korea (2nd Prize); Scotland International Academy Competition (2nd Prize); RCS Concerto Competition (1st Prize); Peter Lindsay Miller Competition (1st Prize); Bamber-Galloway Piano Competition (2nd Prize); and Dunbar-Gerber Prize for Violin and Piano duo (1st Prize).

Hanna also has given many recitals in Glasgow, Dumfries, Bedford, London, and Seoul. Recent activities include a performance with RCS Chamber Orchestra playing Beethoven Piano Concerto No.3 with Alkan’s cadenza at Stevenson Hall (Glasgow); violin and piano duo concert at Broughton House and Garden as Absolute classics series (Dumfries); solo recital at Fernieknowe as Young Artists’ Series (Edinburgh); solo recital at Yamaha Pianos & Chappell of Bond St (London).

한국과 유럽에서 활발한 연주 및 연구활동을 펼치고 있는 피아니스트 최한나는 선화예술고등학교를 실기우수 졸업한 후, 2010년 서울대학교 피아노과 수석, 음악대학 전체 차석으로 졸업하였다. 영국 스코틀랜드 왕립 음악학교 (Royal Conservatoire of Scotland)로 도영하여 전액장학생으로 입학한 후 우등으로 석사 학위를 취득한 피아니스트 최한나는 영국 세인트 앤드류스 대학교 (University of St Andrews)에서 Documenting Developing Performance: Rethinking Nikolay Medtner at the piano (연주창작과정에 관한 실기주도연구: 연주를 통한 메트너의 재고찰) 논문으로 박사학위 (PhD)를 취득하였다.

세계일보 음악콩쿨 2위, 성신여자대학교 전국 음악콩쿨 2위, 한국 독일 브람스협회 전국 콩쿨 1위, 음악교육신문사 음악콩쿨 1위와 더불어, 도영 후 Scotland International Academy Competition 2위, RCS Concerto Competition 1위, Peter Lindsay Miller Prize 1위, Bamber-Galloway Piano Competition 2위, Dunbar-Gerber Prize for Violin and Piano duo 1위 등 다수의 콩쿨에 입상하였다. 또한 Leon Fleisher, Steven Osborne, Arie Vardi의 마스터 클래스에서 연주를 통해 많은 대가들로부터 그 재능을 인정받은 바 있다.
